What is Spiritual Direction?

  • Spiritual Direction is a space to rest, to discern, and to lean into God's presence.

Spiritual Direction is an ongoing process that explores what your experience of God is like, how you are hearing God’s voice in your life (or not), and what apprenticeship to Jesus looks like where you are right now. Spiritual Direction is about growing in awareness of and intimacy with God to live well and rightly in God’s Kingdom right where you are.

How do I know if spiritual direction is right for me?

  • Are you feeling disconnected from God in your life or ministry?

Are you feeling disconnected from God in your life or ministry?

Working with a spiritual director can help you foster a renewed awareness of how God is showing up with you and for you, both in your work and every other part of your life.

  • Are you struggling to keep up with spiritual practices that help you feel closer to God?

Are you struggling to keep up with spiritual practices that help you feel closer to God?

Ministry is often fast-paced and all over the place. A spiritual director can help you navigate what it looks to create space to connect with God in the midst of the life you are leading right now, not the life you wish you had.

  • Do you feel restless or unsatisfied with your current season of the faith journey?

Do you feel restless or unsatisfied with your current season of the faith journey?

The spiritual life looks different for each of us at different phases of our lives. A spiritual director can help you name the season of the spiritual life in which you find yourself and develop the practices you need to connect with God right where you are.

How much is spiritual direction?

One-on-one spiritual direction costs $100 per session with a 6 or 12 session agreement.

However, thanks to our supporters who believe in your ministry, finances don’t have to prevent you from receiving everything God has for you. Some scholarships are available to offset the cost if needed.

How do I start the process?

What people like you are saying about spiritual direction at TRAIN International:

 FAQs

  • Spiritual direction is a specialized pastoral care and spiritual formation ministry that is as old as the Church itself. It is a set-aside time to focus on apprenticeship of the soul to Jesus in the fellowship of someone with a ministry of discernment, support, and prayer.

  • A spiritual director helps you look for the presence of God in your life so that you can grow in intimacy with God, discern what God is inviting you into, and integrate following Jesus into your real world. Spiritual directors are generally trained for two or more years in various skills including active listening, asking powerful questions, discernment, spiritual disciplines, and prayer. Spiritual direction is as much a calling and a gifting as a skillset, so part of the training they receive is to test and validate their calling.

  • Spiritual direction, mentoring, coaching, and counseling are all important ministries for the people of God, and each has a distinct place in the life of faith.

Each of these ministries uses skills likes listening well and asking great questions to help create clarity, but they are looking in different directions.

    • Counseling generally focused on looking backwards at the past in order to create opportunities for healing.

    • Coaching and Mentoring generally focuses on looking forward to what’s next in order to generate momentum.

    • Spiritual direction generally focuses on looking around in the present for God’s movement in order to increase awareness and intimacy with God.

  • That’s a good point of discernment because sometimes spiritual direction is NOT what we need! Spiritual direction covers ground in a lot of areas of our lives, but the primary focus of spiritual direction is on your experience of God and your relationship with God. Here is a non-exhaustive list of indicators you can consider:

    • If you feel stuck in your relationship with God, spiritual direction might be a good fit for you.

    • If you are discerning next steps in a big transition, spiritual direction might be a good fit for you.

    • If you want to grow in spiritual discipline or in prayer, spiritual direction might be a good fit for you.

    • If you want to explore how your life or your story impacts your relationship with God, spiritual direction might be a good fit for you.

  • The standard frequency of spiritual direction is about once a month. This gives space for the person receiving direction to work out, pray through, and reflect on what happened in the previous session without rushing. Spiritual direction, by design, is a slow process of discernment and mapping the soul, so there isn’t a rush to cover ground as quickly as possible.

  • That’s a good question! Spiritual directors are generally bi-vocational and take time away from other forms of work in order to provide this much needed ministry. As such, we want to honor their training, their contribution, and their time by offering fair compensation. Other than directly paying the director, a portion of each direction fee helps underwrite the provision of pre-field training, debriefing retreats, and other ministries we offer to global workers.

  • On the form you fill out to inquire about receiving spiritual direction, there is a question you answer to explore receiving a scholarship. We have a short, painless scholarship application that we use to help us steward the resources God is giving to us and make sure as many people as possible can receive the help they need.

  • Simply put, we believe in this ministry and want to see others benefit from spiritual direction just like we have and, hopefully, just like you will. We want to empower each person who receives direction from us to be able to pay it forward by connecting another cross-cultural worker or ministry leader with this resource at the right time.

  • We never want to trap anyone in spiritual direction, so there is always an opportunity to reassess. However, we have found that it takes about 6 meetings to really feel out the fit with a spiritual director. That’s why our spiritual direction agreements are in six-session intervals: to create a natural opportunity to assess how the relationship is going and discern if there will need to be a change. That said, we have had very few people ever request to switch directors.

  • That’s wonderful! Your spiritual director would be the first person to really talk to about that. Our team has a list of trusted training organizations we have been trained by or have connections with that we would be happy to share with you, but the first step is really to discern in prayer and community if God is calling you to this kind of ministry.

  • You certainly can if you and your spiritual director are in the same place! We find that often our directors are on different sides of the globe, so online is often the only option. However, if there is proximity you and your director can work that out!
